OVERVIEW: The Stingray Mod 0 is a lightweight, air- and surface-launched anti-submarine torpedo developed by the United Kingdom. It uses active acoustic homing and is designed to engage fast, deep-diving submarines in both deep and shallow water environments.

DETAILS: The Stingray Mod 0 was developed in the 1970s and entered service in 1986 as the Royal Navy’s replacement for older Mk 44 and Mk 46 torpedoes. Designed by GEC-Marconi (later BAE Systems), the Mod 0 uses an electric propulsion system powered by a magnesium/silver-chloride seawater battery and operates with a high-frequency active acoustic seeker. It is 324 mm in diameter and capable of deployment from helicopters (e.g., Lynx, Merlin), fixed-wing aircraft, and surface ships using vertical launch systems. The torpedo is equipped with a shaped charge warhead specifically tailored for penetrating double-hulled Soviet submarines.

Unlike earlier systems, Stingray Mod 0 incorporated a tactical processor with autonomous target discrimination, allowing it to avoid decoys and select optimal engagement paths. It was NATO-standard compliant and rapidly became the Royal Navy’s principal lightweight ASW weapon.
